In 13 steps to Teacher Empowerment, there are a lot of good strategies. Teachers want to develop as educators, they need to collaborate with other teachers. There are several ways: first, they can observe others class; second, they can have a small group meeting, to reflect and to discuss the problems and solutions together. However, sometimes the things just do not go to the direction as we expect. For example, the the teacher who observes others’ class, but requested to hand in a summary, if there is not such correct atmosphere to tell the truth, I am afraid that the teacher will never tell the truth even if he or she thinks the teacher has a lot of problems. There are several ways for ourselves to follow, which is based on a positive professional climate, and open-minded principal.
“Plan interdisciplinary learning projects together; review research and target an important problem; form a critical friends group; make time for your own reflection; get to school early; attend a professional conference every year; keep a journal.” In these suggestions, I prefer to make a reflection of my own and journals. It is not easy to keep doing that, but it is really helpful.
There are also others ways to help teachers to be leaders, one is to give them the chance to stand up in the conference, in this situation, it also needs a harmonious atmosphere which created by both principals and teachers. They should be encouraged to speak out their ideas. If new teachers are always get criticized by others, they will never open their mouth anymore. The school can also establish small groups formed by experienced teachers, to train other teachers, including the class managements and professional teaching skills. Only the teachers can learn and help each other, can the school be more productive.
To sum up, the school context is very important for the teachers to learn and even to be a leader. Principal should try to create a supportive and encourage atmosphere, where teachers can learn, communicate, and share their craft knowledge.
