This is log for ECI 508. Teachers as Leaders. There are three books we are requested to read.
Barth, Roland. Learning by Heart. Jossey-Bass, 2001.
Katzenmeyer, Marilyn and Gayle Moller. Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Helping Teachers Develop as Leaders. Corwin, 2009. (3nd edition)
Zemelman, Steven & Harry Ross. 13 Steps to Teacher Empowerment. Heinemann, 2009.
During the class, the professor asked us: " Why do you choose this subject?" Frankly speaking, I chose that because it is a required course for us. However, during the class, the teacher said: " As teachers, have you ever thought that you can be leaders? If we want our students be leaders, how can we do that if we are not?" I am a Chinese, so I was taught to be modest and humble and never try to be the number 1. I never thought that one day I could be a leader, who can leads a group or even more. I still remember the teacher asked us do two things: one was to design our name card, whatever style we like, we could do that in our own will; two was to manage the desks, since there were more desks than we needed and the teacher also wanted us to sit at least in a rectangle, so that we could see each other. They were not big issues, but I could tell that I was shocked by the way of teaching. I have been learning for so many year, I even got my master degree in an institute in China, but I was taught in that way--doing things with your own judgement. There was an American student, who impressed me so much by saying: " I want to be a leader in my school." I have never seen such a person, even those who want to be leaders to express their opinion so directly. Maybe that's the culture difference. The teacher also said that the teachers leadership should not be in limited in the classroom, instead their influence should beyond the classroom. I will learn more and more in this class. I believe that.
