Craft Knowledge, Reflection and Refraction
I love the sentence “ the success of my Reflection/ Refraction process depends on my willingness to listen, to be introspective, and to be able to interpret and act on my own and my students’ language and behavior in ways I might not initially choose.” Not every teachers has such a willingness to listen. There are still some teachers believe that they are always right and never try to track the refraction and the reflections.
In the article it is also said that “ The most important requirement of my refraction is that I be self-critical, that I be willing to face my own fears as a teacher, and that I be vulnerable to alternative meanings.” I think it is really an important character. I still remember that when I first became a teacher, I was so awkward if I was pointed that there was something wrong. I was afraid of everything: the kids could not understand what I taught them; I could not finish the lesson plan; there was not enough time for me to organize the activities. I tried to avoid to take responsibility of being a home teacher. However, after so many years, if now someone gives me the suggestions, I will be so appreciated and make a judgement by myself, if the suggestion is correct, I will correct my mistakes; if someone just misunderstands me, I may explain the reason why I instit. I think that is my craft knowledge. I think the craft knowledge and refraction can enhance each other. Because in my opinion, my refraction can help me accumulate my craft knowledge, and then the craft knowledge could also enable me to be more competent when I face the critical voice or the fear I have to face. I am more confident to the things happen around me. In the same way, I think reflection and craft knowledge also promote each other instead of just one direction. The reflections from students or teachers can help me become more experienced and knowledgeable, which can contribute to my craft knowledge, at the same time, the craft knowledge gives me more comprehending of others and synthesize with them. I would like to learn and absorb my craft knowledge through reflections and refractions. For example, I will recheck my teaching plan and I will write down the reflection of myself, where to improve, which game plays well or the students’ reflection, such as their questions that I could not answer, the homework they give to me and so on. All of those little drops I can gather to my portfolio and they are really good resources of my craft knowledge. My craft knowledge can facilitate myself to gain more skills and methods to receiving new reflections and refractions. So refraction and craft knowledge are to supplement each other, and reflection and craft knowledge need each other, too.
